Chapter 11
THE HOUSE DIDNâT LOOK evil. That was good. In fact, it was quite a respectable house. Nothing too fancy, but nothing shabby or in ill repair either.
Hopefully, that spoke well for the man inside. But weâd soon find that out for ourselves.
Steve wasnât too happy about me taking the lead. That was his problem, not mine. I was the one with the sheriffâs badge, dang it all. As it was that badge that opened the door for us, I was the one in charge. Heâd just have to deal with his issues of inferiority, or whatever they were, on his own time.
It took a full minute and three times knocking before the door slowly opened. I could have been wrong, but I really thought if I hadnât been in full uniform, that still wouldnât have happened. But it did.
I nodded to the man behind the chain. âGavin Mills?â
He nodded back. âThatâs me.â He hesitated. âCan I ask what this is about?â
Here is where having Steve along proved problematic. What I really wanted to do was mention the pack and the fact that I had Grayâs approval to be here. As one of Grayâs pack members, that would mean something. But the man at my back stopped that cold. Anyone with half a nose would know he wasnât a wolf.
âVinnie George,â I said, watching his eyes. They never blinked. âI need to talk with you about your whereabouts during the time of his murder.â
The man didnât move to unlatch the chain. Instead, he just blew out a long breath. âIâve already told you my whereabouts. I was home alone that whole day, evening, and night. It wasnât me.â And the door started to shut. Right up until it hit the reinforced toe of my boot.
âI still want a conversation. Your choice as to whether that takes place here or down at the station.â When he still didnât remove the chain, I added. âI really donât think that chain would hold up against me, do you?â It probably helped that I put a little magic behind the words. No sense dragging this thing out for any longer than we had to.
His eyes widened, but the chain came off and the door opened wider. Gavin looked from me to Steve and back again. âNot so sure I want him to come in.â
âSorry. Heâs with me. Itâs non-negotiable.â
Gavin hesitated again, but when he saw I wasnât about to back down, he stepped to one side and let us in. The living room we stepped into was every bit as ordinary as the outside of the house had been. I was sensing a theme here.
Just an ordinary Joe lives here. Nothing to see, move along. And yes, it was making me think just the opposite was the truth of things.
We all sat down, and Gavin looked at me. âI donât know what else I can tell you. If Iâd known the man was going to be killed, Iâd have made sure to have an alibi available.
